One of the things I have always loved is music and it took on an even greater significance when my husband was ill and then again after he died. Here are a few of the most meaningful – some are sad but some are happy and represent hope.

Just click on the song title and follow the link to YouTube:

The Lonely by Christina Perri :

a truly beautiful but absolutely heartbreaking song that sums up how it feels to be lonely

It’s My Life by Bon Jovi:

this song gave me a kick start when I needed it most

“It’s my life
It’s now or never
I ain’t gonna live forever
I just want to live while I’m alive”

Shine On by James Blunt:

When we were on holiday once someone called my husband ‘smiler’ and there is one lyric in this song that reminds me of that time

“Shine on, just shine on with your smile just as bright as the sun”

Somewhere Over the Rainbow by  Israel Kamakawiwo’ole:

Simply because my husband loved this song and it reminds me of him every time I here it

The Rose by Bette Midler:

I had never heard this song until my husband played it for me over the phone; I was driving at the time and had to pull over as I could not see through my tears. I could not bear to listen to it for over 3 years but I did last week and I am happy to have done so. The words are just beautiful:

“Some say love, it is a river, that drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor, that leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love, it is a hunger, an endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower, and you, its only seed

Its the heart afraid of breaking, that never learns to dance
Its the dream afraid of waking, that never takes the chance
Its the one who won’t be taking, who cannot seem to give
And the soul afraid of dying, that never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter, far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed, that with the sun’s love in the spring becomes the rose”

Encore Un Soir by Celine Dion:

I heard this song a couple of months after I left the UK. I knew enough French to understand that Celine Dion was pleading to have just one more night, one more hour with her husband…………

This Woman’s Work by Kate Bush:

The lyrics to this song broke me down and built me up at the same time:

“I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.

I should be crying, but I just can’t let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can’t stop thinking

Of all the things I should’ve said,
That I never said.
All the things we should’ve done,
That we never did.
All the things I should’ve given,
But I didn’t.

Oh, darling, make it go,
Make it go away.

Give me these moments back.
Give them back to me.
Give me that little kiss.
Give me your hand.”

I’d love to hear about the music that inspires you, comforts you or just lets you cry when you need to………
