Poem (5)

A little bird told me a tale of love and loss

He whispered, his voice strange and grating

With all things, he said, there is always a cost

Pay the price of love and face the risk of hating

Or losing, resenting or desperately needing

Fearing the pain of the end at the start

Taming the beast that forever needs feeding

Turning the key to the cage of your heart

Do you lock or unlock? Is it safer to wait there

Poised on the edge of a chasm or  kerb

Does he love me? I don’t know. How is this fair?

Awake or asleep my dreams he disturbs

Will it be worth it? Will love conquer all

If  I open my heart will the pain start to heal

Does it matter too much, I’ve no further to fall

I will risk all the pain to see if it’s real

And hope you don’t cheat and still more don’t lie

With this a little bird told me ‘goodbye’
